Arbutus unedo, known as the strawberry tree, is an evergreen shrub or small tree appreciated for its unusual autumn display. At the same time as new clusters of small, bell-shaped white flowers appear, the previous season’s fruits mature to bright red, giving a distinctive two-stage effect on the plant. The fruits are rounded and textured, resembling small strawberries, while the glossy dark green leaves provide structure throughout the year. As it matures, the bark develops subtle peeling detail, adding further interest. Suited to sunny or lightly shaded positions in well-drained soil, Arbutus unedo is hardy and performs well in coastal or sheltered gardens, offering long-lasting seasonal character.
