Cornus canadensis
Cornus canadensis is a low-growing woodland perennial valued for its decorative bracts, colourful berries, and autumn foliage. In late spring, each stem carries four petal-like white bracts surrounding a tight cluster of tiny flowers, creating a crisp display above whorls of fresh green leaves. By late summer, these develop into glossy red berries that sit neatly above the foliage, followed by rich red to purple autumn colour before the plant dies back for winter. Naturally found in cool woodland settings, it prefers moist, acidic, humus-rich soil and performs best in partial to full shade. Fully hardy in the UK, it spreads gradually to form an attractive ground-cover carpet ideal for shaded borders and underplanting.
