Humulus lupulus, known as the hop plant, is a fast-growing herbaceous climber that produces vigorous stems each spring. These shoots rapidly twine around supports, carrying large lobed leaves that form thick seasonal coverage through the summer months. Female plants develop the familiar cone-like flowers later in the season, adding ornamental interest before the foliage dies back in autumn. The plant returns from the rootstock the following year with fresh growth. Hardy and dependable in UK gardens, it prefers fertile soil that retains moisture while draining freely and grows best when given a sunny position and strong support for climbing.
