Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’ is a fast-growing deciduous climber recognised for its bright golden foliage and vigorous seasonal growth. Each spring, new shoots emerge from the base and quickly twine up supports, producing large lobed leaves that bring vivid colour to pergolas, fences, or trellises. As the season progresses, the plant forms a thick screen of foliage, and female plants may also develop the familiar hop cones later in summer. When autumn arrives, the top growth dies back to ground level before fresh shoots appear again the following year. Well suited to UK gardens, it grows best in fertile, moisture-retentive soil and thrives in sunny positions where its foliage colour is most intense.
