The name ‘Husker Red’ refers to the foliage rather than the flowers. New leaves emerge with maroon-red colouring, gradually becoming greener as they mature. In summer, upright stems carry white flowers with a subtle pink blush, giving the plant a much lighter appearance in bloom.

Plant this penstemon through the middle of a sunny border, where its slender flowering stems can mingle with other perennials. It works especially well in an informal scheme: try it with blue hardy geraniums, soft pink flowers or fine-leaved ornamental grasses.

The changing leaf colour and pale blooms offer two distinct stages of interest, making ‘Husker Red’ an appealing choice for gardeners who enjoy watching a border develop through the season.
