Phillyrea angustifolia is a tough, evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its narrow, dark green leaves and exceptional tolerance of difficult growing conditions. Native to the Mediterranean, it forms a dense, upright structure with fine-textured foliage that remains attractive throughout the year. In late spring to early summer, small creamy-white flowers are produced along the stems, lightly scented and attractive to pollinators, followed on female plants by small dark berries in autumn. Slow to moderate in growth and typically reaching 3–5 metres if left unpruned, it responds extremely well to clipping and shaping, making it ideal for hedging, screening, windbreaks, and formal evergreen structure. Highly resistant to drought, wind, and coastal exposure, Phillyrea angustifolia is a reliable alternative to box or privet in long-term planting schemes.
