Physocarpus opulifolius ‘All Black’ (PBR) is a compact, deciduous ninebark bred for its exceptionally dark foliage, offering one of the deepest leaf colours available in the genus. In spring, new growth emerges a rich purple-black and quickly deepens to near-black tones that remain consistent through summer, even in sunny positions. This intense colouring provides strong contrast against lighter planting and works particularly well in modern and structured garden designs. In late spring to early summer, small clusters of pale pink to white flowers appear, standing out clearly against the dark leaves and providing light pollinator value, followed by subtle ornamental seed pods. Naturally forming a dense, upright-rounded shrub, ‘All Black’ typically reaches around 1–1.2m in height and spread, making it suitable for borders, low hedging, and containers where bold foliage impact and controlled size are required. Fully hardy across the UK, adaptable, and easy to grow, it delivers long-lasting colour with minimal maintenance.
