Polemonium caeruleum – Blue Jacob’s Ladder
In early summer, Polemonium caeruleum lifts clusters of blue flowers above a clump of fresh green leaves. Yellow stamens brighten the blooms, while rows of paired leaflets give this perennial its familiar name, Jacob’s ladder.
Tuck it between shorter plants to add height to a cottage-style border without creating a heavy block of colour. For a gentle planting scheme, repeat small groups alongside white and pale pink flowers, leaving room for the leafy clumps to develop.
Where growing conditions suit it, Jacob’s ladder can scatter seed nearby. Leave a few flowerheads to mature if you welcome seedlings, or remove them after flowering to keep the planting more contained.
