Syringa chinensis ‘Saugeana’ is an elegant lilac grown for its arching habit and refined spring display. In late spring, slender branches are lined with softly coloured lilac-purple flowers, creating a looser, more flowing effect than traditional upright lilacs. The blooms are strongly scented and sit among fine-textured foliage, giving the shrub a light, informal character that works particularly well in mixed borders. More graceful in outline than common lilac, ‘Saugeana’ develops into a dependable, long-term shrub when grown in sun and free-draining soil, offering fragrance, movement, and classic lilac charm without a rigid form.

How to care for Syringa chinensis 'Saugeana'

Light:
Full sun; flowering and fragrance are strongest in a bright, open position.

Soil:
Fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and light chalk. Avoid waterlogged ground.

Water:
Water well during establishment; once established, it copes with normal rainfall and short dry periods.

Pruning:
Remove spent flower heads immediately after flowering. Any shaping should be done straight after bloom, as flowers are produced on older wood.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK conditions.
