Syringa vulgaris ‘Amethyst’ is a classic lilac grown for its clear violet colouring and strong spring fragrance. In late spring, upright flower panicles open in rich purple shades with subtle tonal variation, creating a bold yet refined display that stands out against the fresh green foliage. The flowers are single and well defined, allowing the colour to read clearly from a distance while still delivering the unmistakable lilac scent up close. With a sturdy, upright structure and dependable performance in sunny, free-draining conditions, ‘Amethyst’ matures into a reliable, long-term shrub that brings colour, fragrance, and traditional lilac character to the garden year after year.

How to care for Syringa vulgaris 'Amethyst'

Light:
Full sun; at least 6 hours of direct light for strong colour and reliable flowering.

Soil:
Fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates chalk and neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. Avoid waterlogged ground.

Water:
Water well during establishment and in prolonged dry spells; established plants are reasonably drought tolerant.

Pruning:
Remove spent flower heads immediately after flowering; carry out any shaping straight after bloom, as flowers are produced on older wood.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK conditions.
