Acer campestre, or field maple, is a resilient, deciduous native tree appreciated for its versatility and strong seasonal character. In spring, it produces small, softly lobed leaves that open bright green, forming a dense canopy through summer before turning clear buttery yellow in autumn. Clusters of modest yellow-green flowers appear in spring and are valuable to pollinating insects, followed by winged seeds later in the season. As it matures, the bark develops shallow ridges and a corky texture, adding quiet winter interest. Highly tolerant of wind, urban pollution, and chalky or clay soils, Acer campestre is widely used for hedging, screening, and countryside planting. Tough, adaptable, and long-lived, it provides dependable structure and wildlife value with very little maintenance.
