Seed Potatoes

Grow potatoes picked for the meals you love, from tender new potatoes with butter to crisp roasties and fluffy mash. Our seed potatoes come in 2kg bags, with first early, second early and maincrop varieties for vegetable beds, allotments and, especially for earlier varieties, roomy patio containers. Choose Charlotte or Nicola for waxy salad potatoes, Maris Piper for chips and roast dinners, or Foremost and Pentland Javelin for an early summer harvest. You will also find red-skinned maincrops, including Sarpo Mira, for gardeners looking for a variety noted for strong resistance to late blight.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I plant seed potatoes in the UK? +

Plant first earlies around late March, second earlies in early to mid-April, and maincrops from mid-April to early May. Adjust for your location and the weather: cold, wet soil delays growth, and emerging shoots need protection from frost.

What is the difference between first early, second early and maincrop potatoes? +

These terms describe how quickly the crop develops. First earlies are generally lifted in June and July, second earlies in July and August, and maincrops from late August into autumn. Actual dates depend on planting time, variety and growing conditions.

Which potatoes are best for salads? +

Charlotte and Nicola have waxy flesh that keeps its shape well after cooking. Maris Peer is another useful option for boiling and serving whole. Lift early varieties while the tubers are small for new potatoes.

Which potatoes are best for chips and roast potatoes? +

Maris Piper is a floury choice for chips, roasting and mash. Kestrel and Setanta are other options for roasting and homemade chips.

Can I grow seed potatoes in bags or pots? +

Yes. Early varieties are particularly useful in containers because they mature sooner and take up less space. Use a large container with drainage holes, leave room to add compost as shoots grow, and water regularly. Avoid overcrowding.

Do I need to chit seed potatoes? +

Chitting means allowing short shoots to develop before planting. It is useful for early varieties but is not essential. Stand the tubers with most eyes facing upwards in a cool, bright, frost-free place for around four to six weeks before planting. Maincrops generally gain less benefit.

How many seed potatoes are in a 2kg bag? +

The number varies with tuber size and variety. Each bag is supplied by weight rather than as a fixed number of seed potatoes.

Are seed potatoes the same as potatoes for eating? +

Seed potatoes are tubers supplied for planting to produce a new crop, rather than packets of botanical seed or potatoes sold for cooking. Plant the supplied tubers and harvest the potatoes they produce.
