Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the monkey puzzle tree, is a distinctive evergreen conifer valued for its bold architectural form and prehistoric character. The stiff, sharply pointed triangular leaves are arranged in dense spirals along the branches, creating a dramatic, sculptural silhouette that is instantly recognisable. Young plants form a strong, symmetrical outline, while mature specimens develop an open, branching structure with a striking, rugged trunk. Slow growing but extremely long-lived, this tree is best suited to spacious gardens where it can be appreciated as a statement specimen. Hardy and tolerant of poor soils once established, Araucaria araucana thrives in a sunny, open position and provides year-round structure and visual impact.
