Aristolochia durior (often known as Dutchman’s pipe) is a vigorous deciduous climber grown for its exceptionally large, heart-shaped leaves that create dense, dramatic cover through summer. The fresh green foliage overlaps to form an effective living screen on walls, pergolas, and arbours, giving a bold, architectural look. In early summer, unusual pipe-shaped flowers appear, greenish-yellow with purple-brown markings, though they are usually hidden beneath the foliage. Fast growing and robust, it thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Hardy and reliable, Aristolochia durior is ideal where rapid coverage and striking leaf impact are the main priorities.
