Blechnum spicant brings fine detail to a shady border, with dark green fronds arranged around a central crown. Most arch outwards close to the ground, while slender, spore-bearing fronds stand above them, creating an attractive contrast in shape.

This native fern, also known as hard fern, suits cool spots with consistently moist soil. Tuck it between larger woodland plants or repeat it beside a shaded walkway, where its patterned foliage can be enjoyed close up. Broad-leaved companions make a particularly pleasing backdrop.
