Clematis armandii is a vigorous, evergreen climber prized for its glossy, leathery foliage and masses of fragrant spring flowers. In early to mid-spring, large clusters of creamy white, star-shaped blooms appear along the stems, releasing a strong, sweet scent that carries well in warm weather. The long, narrow leaves remain dark green throughout the year, providing valuable year-round coverage and structure. Fast growing once established, this clematis is ideal for covering walls, fences, and pergolas in sheltered, sunny positions, delivering both evergreen presence and an impressive burst of spring interest.

How to care for Clematis armandii

Light:
Prefers a sunny to lightly shaded position. A sheltered spot with good light encourages better flowering and healthy evergreen growth.

Soil:
Grows best in fertile, well-drained soil that holds some moisture. Improving the soil with organic matter at planting helps establishment.

Water:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.

Pruning:
Pruning group 1. Flowers are produced on growth made the previous year. Prune only if necessary, immediately after flowering, to keep the plant tidy or control size.

Hardiness:
Evergreen and hardy in mild to sheltered gardens. In colder areas, protect from harsh winds and severe frost, especially when young.

Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support strong growth and flowering.
