Clethra alnifolia is a hardy deciduous shrub admired for its strongly fragrant summer blooms and dependable growth habit. In mid to late summer, slender upright racemes of small white flowers rise above glossy green leaves, producing a noticeable sweet scent and attracting bees and other beneficial insects. As the season shifts, the foliage turns soft shades of yellow, adding autumn interest. Well suited to UK conditions, it grows best in moist, well-drained acidic to neutral soils and performs reliably in full sun or partial shade, making it an excellent choice for woodland-style gardens, mixed borders, and consistently damp planting areas.
