Clethra alnifolia ‘Sixteen Candles’ is a slow-growing, deciduous shrub bred for its short stature and prominent summer flowering. In mid to late summer, it produces vertical spikes of small, white, highly scented flowers that rise clearly above the foliage, adding height and interest without overwhelming surrounding plants. The leaves are a rich green through summer before fading to pale yellow as autumn approaches. Exceptionally well suited to UK gardens, it prefers moisture-retentive but free-draining acidic to neutral soil and grows reliably in sun or partial shade. Its compact form and strong seasonal presence make it especially useful for smaller gardens, front-of-border positions, and woodland-style planting where late-season fragrance and structure are important.
