Daphne mezereum ‘Rubra’ is a deciduous shrub valued for its intensely fragrant early flowers and strong seasonal character. In late winter to early spring, clusters of deep pink to reddish-purple blooms appear directly along the bare stems, filling the garden with scent at a time when little else is in flower. Narrow green leaves emerge after flowering, followed later by bright red berries that add further ornamental interest. Fully hardy in UK conditions, it prefers a sheltered position in well-drained, humus-rich soil and performs best in full sun or partial shade. Ideal for woodland gardens or sheltered borders, it provides valuable early colour and fragrance at the start of the growing season.

How to care for Daphne mezereum 'Rubra'

Light:
Best grown in full sun or partial shade. A sheltered position helps protect early flowers from harsh weather.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil. Performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and dislikes waterlogging.

Water:
Keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Once settled, water during prolonged dry periods but avoid overly wet soil.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning required. Remove dead or damaged wood after flowering if needed, as daphnes dislike heavy pruning or root disturbance.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK gardens, tolerating winter cold well when planted in a sheltered spot.

Feeding:
