Crested Scaly Male Fern
Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata The King’ – Crested Scaly Male Fern
Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata The King’ gives a shaded border a generous sweep of green. Its fronds rise from the crown before arching outwards, with branching crests at their tips adding intricate detail to the foliage.
Give this substantial fern room to develop its shape. It makes an attractive backdrop to smaller woodland plants, or a focal point beside a shaded seating area. Pair it with broad-leaved hostas or smooth-fronded hart’s tongue ferns to bring out the differences in texture.
Often retaining foliage well into winter, ‘Cristata The King’ helps keep a planting scheme looking established beyond the summer months. It is also sold as Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata’ or ‘The King’.
