Allow a generous planting gap for Dryopteris filix-mas so its mature fronds have room to spread. Over time, the fronds fill the space above the crown, creating a tall fan of greenery that stands out among lower-growing shade plants.

Beside a curving walkway, position the crown far enough from the edge for the foliage to arch out without obstructing the path. It also works among shrubs with bare lower branches, filling the space beneath them during the growing season. Leave smaller neighbours room around its base so they remain visible as the fern matures.

Known as male fern, this British native follows a clear seasonal rhythm: green growth through the warmer months, followed by winter dormancy. Snowdrops planted nearby can provide interest before the next set of fronds begins to unfurl.

How to care for Dryopteris filix-mas – Hardy Male Fern

Keep the roots supplied with moisture during the first growing season. Once established, male fern tolerates some dry shade, although watering during prolonged drought helps preserve the foliage. Mulch around the plant without covering its crown. Clear away dead fronds before new growth emerges in spring.
