Dryopteris filix-mas ‘Linearis Polydactyla’ – Fine-Leaved Male Fern

Size

There is an almost lace-like quality to Dryopteris filix-mas ‘Linearis Polydactyla’. Each frond has a fine, open outline, with narrow leaflets ending in tiny forks. Despite its substantial size, the plant has a light, open appearance.

Use it where a border needs height without a dense mass of foliage. Against the broad leaves of a hosta, its intricate outline becomes particularly noticeable. It would also make an attractive focal point beside a shaded path, with smaller woodland plants gathered around its base.

The fronds rise from a central clump and gradually arch outwards. They die back for winter, making the return of fresh growth part of the plant’s seasonal appeal.
