Euonymus alatus
Euonymus alatus, often called the winged spindle or burning bush, is a deciduous shrub best known for its dramatic autumn display. Through the growing season it forms a tidy mound of green foliage, but as autumn arrives the leaves change to intense crimson and scarlet tones that make the plant highly noticeable in the landscape. Its young branches develop narrow corky ridges along their length, creating the characteristic “winged” appearance that remains visible after the leaves fall. Small, fairly inconspicuous flowers can appear in late spring, sometimes followed by small seed capsules later in the year. Hardy and adaptable, it grows in most garden soils that drain well and performs in both sunny and partially shaded positions, making it a reliable choice where strong seasonal colour is desired.
