Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Danube’, also known as ‘Blaue Donau’, is a classic deciduous mophead hydrangea with glossy green toothed leaves and large rounded summer flower heads. The blooms can range from deep pink through to bright blue depending on soil pH, with acidic soil helping to produce bluer flowers and more neutral or alkaline soil often giving pinker tones. This makes it a beautiful choice for patio pots, cottage gardens, mixed borders and sheltered planting schemes where you want bold summer colour. It grows best in partial shade with moist but well-drained soil, or in sun if the soil stays reliably moist.

How to care for Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Danube (Blaue Donau)'

Plant Hydrangea ‘Blue Danube’ in partial shade with moist but well-drained soil. Water well while establishing and keep container-grown plants evenly moist during warm weather. For bluer flowers, grow in acidic soil or ericaceous compost and use a hydrangea colourant if needed. In early spring, remove dead or weak stems and cut old flower heads back to a strong pair of buds.
