Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Kardinal’ is a striking lacecap hydrangea with rich pink-red to purple flower heads through summer and into autumn. The flat lacecap blooms have showy outer florets around smaller central flowers, giving a softer, more delicate look than a traditional mophead hydrangea. It has dark green serrated foliage and a naturally bushy shape, making it a lovely choice for cottage gardens, mixed borders, patio pots and sheltered garden spaces. Flower colour can vary depending on soil type, with more acidic soil producing deeper red-purple tones and neutral to alkaline soil giving pinker flowers.
