Magnolia 'Genie' is an award-winning, deciduous small tree or upright shrub celebrated for its dramatic, near-black buds that open into magnificent maroon, tulip-shaped flowers. These lightly scented, 15cm-wide blooms appear on bare branches in mid-to-late spring, providing an intense splash of colour before the dark green foliage emerges. Bred over 15 years from M. soulangeana and M. liliiflora, this New Zealand cultivar maintains a stable, deep purple-red colour that does not fade as the flowers age. With a tidy, pyramidal-to-rounded habit reaching an ultimate height of 3–4.5 metres and a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres, 'Genie' is an exceptional focal point for small-to-medium gardens and is highly effective when grown in large patio containers.
