Nandina domestica is an ornamental shrub commonly grown for its foliage rather than its flowers. It forms upright stems with finely divided leaves that provide structure throughout the year. The plant maintains a tidy outline and adapts well to garden planting or containers, particularly in sheltered positions with free-draining soil.

How to care for Nandina domestica

Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour develops in sun, with some shelter from cold winds.

Soil:
Moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Adapts to most garden soils, including clay, provided drainage is good.

Water:
Water regularly during establishment. Once settled, it tolerates short dry periods.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning required. In spring, remove a few older stems at ground level to encourage fresh growth and maintain shape.

Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser or organic mulch in spring to support healthy growth and colour.

Hardiness:
Hardy in most UK gardens; foliage colour is strongest in mild, sheltered positions.
