How to care for Paeonia suffruticosa 'Xue Ta'

Light:
Full sun to light partial shade. Morning sun with some shelter from strong afternoon heat is ideal.

Soil:
Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.

Water:
Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry spells. Once settled, it dislikes both drought stress and winter wet.

Pruning:
Very little pruning required. Remove only dead or damaged wood in spring. Do not cut back hard, as flowers are produced on old wood.

Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser or organic mulch in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in the UK once established. Young plants benefit from shelter from cold, drying winds and late frosts.
