Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Lady in Red’ (PBR) is a deciduous ninebark valued for its vibrant ruby-red spring foliage, which gradually matures to rich bronze-green tones through summer before developing warm red shades in autumn. In early to mid-summer, clusters of soft pink flowers appear against the coloured leaves, followed by attractive red seed pods that extend seasonal interest. As the shrub matures, older stems reveal decorative peeling bark, adding winter texture and structure. Reaching approximately 1.5m in height and spread, it forms a naturally bushy, arching plant ideal for mixed borders, feature planting, and informal hedging. Fully hardy throughout the UK and tolerant of most well-drained soils including clay, ‘Lady in Red’ is a reliable, low-maintenance choice for adding strong foliage contrast and multi-season colour to garden planting schemes.
