Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Little Angel’ (PBR) is a dwarf, deciduous ninebark prized for its deep burgundy-purple foliage and compact, rounded growth. Emerging rich wine-red in spring, the finely cut leaves retain their intense colour throughout summer before developing warmer red-bronze tones in autumn, providing strong multi-season interest. In early summer, clusters of soft white flowers contrast beautifully against the dark foliage and are followed by subtle ornamental seed heads. Naturally forming a dense mound to approximately 60–80cm in height and spread, ‘Little Angel’ is ideal for smaller gardens, front-of-border planting, low hedging, and patio containers where bold foliage colour and controlled size are essential. Fully hardy across the UK, tolerant of most well-drained soils including clay and chalk, and drought tolerant once established, it is a low-maintenance, high-impact shrub suited to both modern and traditional planting schemes.
