Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Magic Ball’ (PBR) is a compact, deciduous ninebark valued for its intense golden-yellow foliage, neat rounded habit, and reliable seasonal colour. Fresh spring growth emerges bright gold with warm amber tones, holding its colour well through summer without scorching in full sun, before deepening to rich orange shades in autumn for extended interest. In early summer, small clusters of white flowers appear against the luminous foliage, followed by subtle decorative seed heads. Reaching approximately 80–150cm in height and spread, this low-maintenance shrub is ideal for borders, low hedging, and containers where controlled size and long-lasting foliage colour are required. Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant of most well-drained soils including clay and chalk, and drought tolerant once established, ‘Magic Ball’ delivers dependable performance across multiple seasons.
