Pinus densiflora ‘Alice Verkade’ is a compact, slow-growing form of Japanese red pine grown for its tight structure and refined character rather than height or spread. The plant develops a dense, rounded outline with short, slender needles that emerge fresh green before deepening in colour, giving it a calm, balanced appearance through the seasons. Growth is steady and controlled, allowing it to retain a neat shape without regular pruning or intervention. Rather than acting as a dominant feature, ‘Alice Verkade’ contributes texture and evergreen structure at low level, making it particularly suitable for small gardens, containers, rock gardens, and Japanese-inspired planting where proportion, form, and long-term stability are more important than rapid growth or dramatic scale.

How to care for Pinus densiflora 'Alice Verkade'

Light:
Full sun; best for compact growth and good needle colour.

Soil:
Free-draining soil is essential. Performs well in sandy or loamy ground and tolerates slightly alkaline soils. Avoid waterlogging.

Water:
Water regularly during the first year to establish roots; once established, drought tolerant and prefers drier conditions.

Pruning:
Very little required. If refinement is needed, pinch or shorten new candles in late spring; do not cut into old wood.
