Evergreen Common Polypody Fern
Polypodium vulgare – Evergreen Common Polypody Fern
Small spaces between rocks and larger plants are ideal places to introduce Polypodium vulgare. New fronds emerge farther from the original planting point as the fern spreads, gradually filling nearby gaps with foliage.
Give it a position where its divided leaves remain visible, perhaps beside a stone edging or beneath the arching foliage of a taller fern. Allow gaps around the original plant so it can gradually spread into the surrounding space.
This fern grows naturally in Britain and is commonly called polypody. Its evergreen foliage helps keep a border looking leafy beyond summer. Water well while it settles in; with established roots, it becomes more tolerant of the drier conditions often found in shade.
