The sheen of Polystichum polyblepharum gives its foliage a particularly rich appearance. Each dark green frond carries rows of finely divided leaflets, creating a full, layered plant that rewards a closer look.

Spring brings a change in colour and posture: pale new fronds rise through the older growth, their golden scales catching the light. As they develop, they spread outwards and deepen in colour, adding another layer to the clump.

Known as Japanese tassel fern or Japanese lace fern, it makes an attractive focal point in a shaded courtyard. Try it in a generous container beside a plain wall, where the outline of the foliage remains visible, or combine it with smoother-leaved plants in a woodland border. Its evergreen growth helps maintain interest through winter.
