Soft Shield Fern
Polystichum setiferum ‘Herrenhausen’ – Soft Shield Fern
Polystichum setiferum ‘Herrenhausen’ rewards a close look. Each green frond divides into numerous fine segments, giving the plant a feathery appearance as its foliage overlaps and spreads.
Choose it for a shaded border where leaf shape takes centre stage. Against the broad foliage of a hosta or bergenia, its intricate pattern becomes more noticeable. Alternatively, plant it beside a simple stone feature, leaving enough room for the fronds to develop without crowding.
Fresh growth uncurls in spring, gradually rebuilding the leafy clump. ‘Herrenhausen’ is semi-evergreen, so some foliage may remain through winter, depending on the weather and position.
