For a shaded spot where a large fern would overwhelm the planting, consider Polystichum tsussimense. This compact species holds its glossy green fronds upright, allowing the small, pointed leaflets to remain clearly visible.

Known as Korean rock fern, it works well as a small feature in its own right. Give it a pot with room to develop, or plant it beside a stone where the foliage can overlap the edge. In a mixed border, keep taller plants behind it so its detailed outline does not disappear beneath neighbouring leaves.

Its evergreen habit makes it useful for maintaining greenery when seasonal flowers have finished. A cool position with moisture in the soil and good drainage will help it settle into a lasting part of the display.
