Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’ is an ornamental grass grown for its ultra-fine texture and flowing movement rather than bold colour or height. Narrow, thread-like leaves form a soft mound that shifts constantly in the breeze, creating a light, dynamic effect in borders and gravel planting. In summer, delicate flower heads rise above the foliage, catching the light and adding to the plant’s airy appearance. As the season progresses, the colour softens to pale blonde tones, extending its visual appeal into autumn. Best used where drainage is excellent, ‘Pony Tails’ works beautifully in modern, naturalistic, and Mediterranean-style gardens, offering movement and texture with very little maintenance.

How to care for Stipa tenuissima 'Pony Tails'

Light:
Full sun; the finest texture and movement develop in bright, open positions.

Soil:
Very well-drained soil; thrives in sandy or gritty ground and dislikes winter wet.

Water:
Water during establishment only; once settled, it is drought tolerant and prefers dry conditions.

Pruning:
Do not cut back hard. In early spring, gently comb through by hand to remove dead foliage.

Hardiness:
Hardy in most UK gardens if drainage is good; protect from prolonged winter wet.

Feeding:
No feeding required; rich soil encourages floppy growth.
