Frequently Asked Questions

Are Encore® azaleas evergreen? +

Encore® azaleas are generally considered semi-evergreen in the UK. They may retain much of their foliage during mild winters, while colder temperatures or exposed positions can cause some leaf drop. Fresh new foliage develops again in spring, providing attractive structure for much of the year.

What are Encore® azaleas? +

Encore® azaleas are compact evergreen shrubs specially bred to flower more than once during the growing season. They produce their main display in spring, followed by further flowers during summer and autumn when growing conditions are suitable.

Do Encore® azaleas prefer sun or shade? +

Plant Encore® azaleas in full sun or partial shade. A position receiving around four to six hours of direct or filtered sunlight usually encourages the best flowering. Plants grown in deeper shade may produce fewer flowers, while some afternoon shade can help in hot, exposed gardens.

What soil do Encore® azaleas need? +

Encore® azaleas grow best in moist but well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. In unsuitable or alkaline soil, grow them in containers filled with ericaceous compost and feed with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants.

Can Encore® azaleas be grown in pots? +

Yes. Their naturally compact growth makes many Encore® azaleas suitable for patio pots and containers. Choose a container with good drainage, use ericaceous compost and water regularly so the compost remains evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.
