Hebe Buying Guide

Hebes are versatile evergreen shrubs that bring year-round foliage, neat structure and colourful flowers to borders, pots and patio displays. With varieties ranging from compact, rounded plants to larger flowering shrubs, there is a Hebe for almost every garden style.

Choosing the Right Hebe

The best Hebe depends on the space you have and the look you want to create.

For pots, edging and smaller gardens, choose a naturally compact variety such as Hebe ‘Green Globe’, which forms a neat mound of small evergreen leaves. Compact Hebes are also useful at the front of borders where their foliage provides structure throughout the year.

For a larger flowering shrub, varieties such as Hebe ‘Midsummer Beauty’ are better suited to mixed borders and areas where a little more height is needed. Larger Hebes can make attractive evergreen feature plants while producing colourful flower spikes during the warmer months.

Our Hebe collection includes a wide range of foliage colours, flower colours and growing habits, making it easy to find a variety to suit your garden.

Where to Plant Hebes

Most Hebes grow best in full sun or light partial shade. A sunny position generally encourages stronger flowering and compact growth.

Choose soil that is well drained, particularly during winter. Hebes dislike sitting in cold, waterlogged ground, so improving heavy soil with organic matter and grit can help drainage.

Many varieties also perform well in coastal gardens, where their evergreen foliage and naturally compact growth make them useful for exposed planting schemes. Hardiness does vary between varieties, so more tender Hebes are best given a sheltered position away from severe winter weather.

Growing Hebes in Pots

Compact Hebes are excellent plants for containers and can provide colour and structure throughout the year.

Use a good-quality, free-draining compost and choose a container with adequate drainage holes. Position the pot somewhere sunny or lightly shaded and water regularly during dry weather, particularly while the plant is establishing.

Hebes work especially well in mixed patio displays where their evergreen foliage provides structure between seasonal flowering plants.

When Do Hebes Flower?

Flowering time varies between varieties, but many Hebes produce their main display from summer into early autumn.

Their flower spikes can appear in shades of purple, blue, pink and white and are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Growing several different Hebe varieties can help extend the flowering season while adding a mixture of foliage shapes and colours to the garden.

Once established, Hebes are generally easy to maintain. Water newly planted shrubs regularly during their first growing season and during prolonged dry periods.

After flowering, lightly trim back spent flower stems and any untidy growth to help maintain a compact shape. Avoid cutting heavily into old woody stems unless necessary.

A light feed in spring can encourage healthy new growth and flowering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Hebe plants evergreen? +

Yes, most Hebe plants are evergreen, meaning they keep their foliage throughout the year. This makes them useful for adding structure, colour and shape to borders, pots and low-maintenance garden displays.

Where is the best place to plant Hebes? +

Hebes grow best in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. A sheltered position is ideal, especially in colder or exposed gardens, as Hebes do not like sitting in cold, wet soil during winter.

Can Hebes be grown in pots? +

Yes, many compact Hebe varieties grow very well in patio pots and containers. Use free-draining compost, make sure the pot has drainage holes and water regularly during dry weather.

When do Hebes flower? +

Many Hebes flower from summer into autumn, although some varieties bloom earlier. Flower colours vary by variety and can include purple, pink, lilac, blue and white.

Are Hebes good for bees? +

Yes, flowering Hebes are popular with bees and other pollinators. Varieties that flower in summer and autumn are especially useful because they provide nectar later in the season.

How do you prune Hebe plants? +

Hebes usually only need light pruning. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant neat, and remove any damaged or dead growth in spring. Avoid cutting hard into old woody stems.

What is the difference between Hebe and Veronica? +

Many Hebes are now listed botanically under the name Veronica, but most gardeners and customers still know them as Hebe plants.
