Akebia quinata is a vigorous, semi-evergreen climber grown for its unusual spring flowers and quick ability to cover structures. In spring, it produces small clusters of dark purple to wine-coloured flowers with a light chocolate-like scent, followed in warm summers by elongated purple fruits if pollination occurs. The foliage is made up of smooth, five-part leaves that give a light, open appearance and often remain on the plant in mild winters. Highly adaptable and easy to grow, it thrives in sun or partial shade and suits walls, fences, and pergolas where fast coverage and distinctive seasonal interest are required.
