Choosing the Right Hibiscus for Your Garden

Hardy hibiscus shrubs are best chosen by flower colour, mature size and where you want to plant them. For a classic clean look, choose a white variety such as Hibiscus syriacus White Chiffon or Red Heart. For cooler colour, blue and lilac-toned varieties such as Blue Chiffon and Marina work beautifully in sunny mixed borders. Pink varieties, including Pink Chiffon, are ideal for soft late-summer colour. If you are planting in a patio pot, choose a compact or naturally upright variety and use a large, stable container with free-draining compost. For borders, taller varieties can be used as feature shrubs or as part of a sunny flowering shrub border. Most hardy hibiscus prefer a warm, sunny, sheltered position and fertile, well-drained soil. If your garden is exposed, give young plants some protection while they establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hibiscus plants hardy in the UK? +

The hibiscus plants in this collection are hardy garden shrubs, mainly Hibiscus syriacus, also known as Rose of Sharon. They are suitable for outdoor planting in UK gardens, unlike tropical hibiscus, which needs warmer protected conditions.

Where is the best place to plant a hibiscus? +

Plant hardy hibiscus in a warm, sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. A sunny spot will usually give the best flowering.

When do hibiscus plants flower? +

Hardy hibiscus shrubs usually flower from midsummer into autumn, often bringing colour in late summer when many other shrubs are past their peak.

Can hibiscus grow in pots? +

Yes, many hardy hibiscus shrubs can be grown in large patio pots. Use a good-quality, free-draining compost, water regularly in dry weather, and choose a sheltered sunny position.

What is the difference between Hibiscus syriacus and tropical hibiscus? +

Hibiscus syriacus, or Rose of Sharon, is a hardy deciduous shrub for outdoor gardens. Tropical hibiscus is usually grown as a houseplant or conservatory plant in the UK because it is not reliably hardy outdoors.

Should I prune hibiscus plants? +

Hardy hibiscus can be lightly pruned in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged or crossing stems and to keep the shrub in shape.
