Cornus florida 'Cherokee Chief' is a popular flowering dogwood grown for its rich red spring bracts, which appear before the leaves and provide strong early-season colour. It develops into a small deciduous tree with a balanced, spreading shape and attractive layered branches. The leaves open with a bronze tint, turn green through summer, and finish with red to purple autumn colour. Berries may appear occasionally but are not a reliable feature. In winter, the tree shows neat grey-brown bark, adding subtle structure to the garden.
