Cornus mas
Cornus mas is a robust deciduous shrub or small tree grown for its very early display of golden-yellow flowers and dependable year-round interest. Flowering in late winter to early spring on bare branches, it brings bright seasonal colour and provides an important nectar source for early insects. Oval green leaves develop through spring and summer, followed by glossy red fruits and warm yellow autumn foliage before leaf fall. Exceptionally hardy in UK gardens, it adapts well to a range of well-drained soils and grows successfully in full sun or partial shade, making it well suited to mixed borders, informal hedging, or specimen planting where early seasonal impact is desired.
