Gymnocladus dioica, commonly known as the Kentucky coffeetree, is a distinctive deciduous tree recognised for its bold structure and unusually large foliage. The leaves are made up of many small leaflets arranged on large branching stems, creating a broad but airy canopy through the growing season. During early summer, subtle greenish-white flowers may develop, and female trees can later produce long dark seed pods. In autumn the foliage fades to soft yellow before falling, revealing the tree’s strong branching framework. Well suited to spacious gardens and parkland settings, it grows best in fertile soil with good drainage and performs reliably in a sunny position in UK conditions.
