Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' (PBR) is a deciduous shrub known for its dark foliage and strong presence in the garden. Throughout spring and summer, the leaves are deep purple to burgundy, creating contrast against lighter planting. In autumn, the foliage can soften to red-bronze and wine tones before dropping. The plant forms an upright, spreading framework of stems and grows more substantially than compact Physocarpus varieties, making it suitable for larger borders or informal screening. Flowering is brief and secondary, with small pale blooms appearing in late spring. This variety is best used where long-season foliage colour and robust structure are required.
