Prunus ž cistena is a compact ornamental shrub valued for its richly coloured foliage and early spring flowers. Pale pink blossoms appear along the stems before or as the leaves emerge, creating a soft contrast against the developing dark foliage. As the season progresses, the leaves deepen to burgundy-purple, giving the plant a strong presence through summer before shifting to warm autumn shades. With its manageable size and naturally tidy form, it works well as a feature shrub, informal hedge, or part of mixed planting. Hardy and adaptable, Prunus ž cistena provides long-lasting colour and structure with minimal maintenance.

How to care for Prunus cistena

Light:
Full sun is best to maintain strong leaf colour and compact growth; light shade is tolerated but reduces intensity.

Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil; adapts to most garden soils but dislikes persistent waterlogging.

Water:
Water regularly while establishing; once settled, it copes well with normal rainfall, with extra watering only in extended dry spells.

Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to keep a neat shape and encourage fresh, colourful growth.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK conditions.

Feeding:
Apply a spring mulch; additional feeding is rarely necessary on reasonably fertile soils.
