Quercus ilex is a powerful evergreen oak valued for its strength, longevity, and all-season presence. Its tough, dark green leaves remain on the tree year-round, forming a dense canopy that gives weight and shelter to the landscape even in winter. As it matures, the tree develops a broad, commanding structure with a distinctly Mediterranean character, yet it performs reliably in UK conditions. Once established, it copes exceptionally well with drought, wind, and coastal exposure, requiring very little ongoing attention. Ideal for large gardens and open settings, Quercus ilex is a long-term investment tree that provides permanence, resilience, and strong architectural form.

How to care for Quercus ilex

Light:
Thrives in full sun but also tolerates partial shade; best grown in open positions for balanced growth.

Soil:
Highly adaptable, growing well in most well-drained soils including clay, chalk, and sandy ground. Avoid persistently waterlogged sites.

Water:
Water regularly during establishment; once mature, it is very drought tolerant and usually relies on rainfall alone.

Pruning:
Pruning is rarely necessary. If required, prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK conditions, including coastal and exposed locations.

Feeding:
Feeding is generally unnecessary; a spring mulch is sufficient on poorer soils.
