Rhododendron ‘Dopey’ is a compact evergreen rhododendron selected for its strong spring colour and naturally rounded form. In late spring, it produces dense trusses of deep red to crimson flowers, often showing slightly lighter tones toward the edges as the blooms mature. The flowers sit neatly above the foliage, creating a concentrated burst of colour without the plant needing height or spread to stand out. The leaves are thick, dark green, and slightly felted when young, forming a low, dome-shaped shrub that remains tidy throughout the year. Slow growing and inherently well balanced, ‘Dopey’ is particularly well suited to containers, the front of ericaceous borders, and sheltered garden spaces where bold colour, evergreen structure, and controlled size are essential.

How to care for Rhododendron (Y) 'Dopey'

Light:
Light shade or morning sun is ideal; shelter from strong afternoon sun.

Soil:
Acidic, humus-rich, free-draining soil is essential. Avoid lime and poorly drained ground.

Water:
Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during establishment and dry periods. Shallow roots must not dry out.

Pruning:
Very little pruning required. Remove spent flower trusses after flowering to keep the plant tidy.

Hardiness:
Hardy in UK conditions; protection from cold, drying winds improves results.

Feeding:
Feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser or mulch with leaf mould or composted bark.
