Syringa vulgaris ‘Charles Joly’ is a traditional lilac prized for its richly coloured, fully double flowers and powerful spring fragrance. In late spring, large upright panicles open in deep purple-red tones, creating a dramatic and luxurious display that stands out strongly against the fresh green foliage. The flowers are densely layered, giving them a full, textured appearance while releasing a strong, unmistakable lilac scent. With a sturdy, upright framework and reliable performance in sunny, free-draining conditions, ‘Charles Joly’ matures into a substantial, long-term shrub that delivers consistent colour, fragrance, and structure year after year.

How to care for Syringa vulgaris 'Charles Joly'

Light:
Full sun; strong light is essential for good flower colour and heavy flowering.

Fertile, well-drained soil; tolerant of chalk and neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. Avoid waterlogged ground.

Water:
Water well during establishment and in extended dry spells; mature plants cope well with normal rainfall.

Pruning:
Remove spent flower heads immediately after flowering; carry out any shaping straight after bloom as flowers are formed on old wood.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy in UK conditions.

Feeding:
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser; avoid high-nitrogen feeds which encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
