Windmill palm is one of the hardiest palms available. Windmill palms will grow at least 30 cm a year once established. The thick, dark trunk has a coarse, hairy texture. In May or June, long, dense clusters of small yellow flowers appear. Grows well as an indoor plant in cold areas, as it adapts well to container cultivation.

How to care for Trachycarpus fortunei

Light:
Full sun to partial shade; tolerates shade but develops a stronger crown in good light.

Well-drained soil is essential; adapts to most soil types, including clay, provided drainage is adequate.

Water:
Water regularly during establishment; once established, it copes well with normal rainfall but appreciates watering in prolonged dry periods.

Pruning:
Remove dead or damaged leaves as required; avoid cutting green, healthy fronds.

Hardiness:
One of the hardiest palms; suitable for most UK gardens, tolerating frost and cold winds once established.
